Food Review: Bangkok House, Sunway Giza

Since I cook on most weekdays, weekends are my "days-off".  Whilst it's nice to eat out for a change and try different restaurants, it's also getting pretty expensive eating out as a family these days.

That's where discount sites like Groupon and Living Social comes in handy.  We've spotted some good deals lately, particularly on food vouchers.  Of course there will always be hits and misses.  Just do your research on the restaurant, check out their menu, and stay away from deals for set meals.  I find that deals for ala carte meals are always a better value than those for set meals; mainly because it's harder to "cut corners" on the entire menu than on a set course.

Hubby and I like thai food, and my son loves tom yum soup (the less spicy version), so when the deal for Bangkok House came up recently, I bought two vouchers for 45% off.

The restaurant has three branches, and we chose the one in Sunway Giza since it was the nearest to us.  The place is very pleasant, the menu extensive, and prices are reasonable.  Good start.

Dishes wise, we decided to stick to the basics to see how well they can execute the popular thai staples.

Chicken Tom Yum, clear version and non spicy.

A light and clear soup, non threatening enough to be children friendly.  Generous chunks of mushrooms and chicken fillet in a good size soup bowl.  There's enough to fill 5 rice bowls.

Green Curry with Beef.  This was extremely good.  A well balanced rendition of creaminess and sweetness, with chunky beef slices and long beans.  I also like the fact that it's not so spicy as to burn right through your stomach! It would have been perfect if they have added in some egg plant.

Stir Fry Kailan with Salted Fish.  Again, a generous portion of greens with bits of salted fish.  Another tasty dish to get you ordering that extra bowl of white rice.

Chicken with Cashew Nuts and Dried Chilli.  Although tasty, this turned out to be something like sweet and sour chicken, which was not what it's supposed to be.  Still, hubby and my son enjoyed it.

We also ordered two desserts - Gula Melaka Coconut Jelly and Tub Tim Krub (Thai Red Ruby with Coconut Milk and Jackfruit on Ice).  Unfortunately I forgot to take photos coz the kids were getting rather restless by then.  But both items were pretty good, and I was pleasantly surprised at the freshness of the Thai red rubies and coconut milk. It was a refreshing palate cleanser post dinner.

For drinks, hubby ordered the Thai Soya Bean which tasted almost like Soy Milk as it was quite thick and milky.

Overall, we enjoyed the meal and felt that it was a very good deal.  Whilst not terribly authentic and sadly pork-free, it's good enough to whet the cravings for some familiar thai grub.  So just before I typed out this post, I checked back on the website and bought 4 more vouchers :))

  1. Hi Esther! I agree with you on avoiding set meals. They leave me very disappointed and I would rather pay a bit more on the ala carte. The green curry beef looks delicious. That is what I would order too at any Thai outlet. I should check them out one day.

  3. Hi Esther,

We had a great time eating at Phuket too. Everything in menu sounds pretty authentic to me. Thick and milky Thai soya bean drink??? Sounds interesting!
